You are ready to buy your first motorcycle and deciding which motorcycle is right for you is almost like shopping for a new car. The motorcycle is a big investment and should be taken seriously. Of course you will have to have one that is pleasing to the eye but there are very important safety issues to consider as well.
There are many different makes and models to choose from and if you don’t have a specific bike in mind, some basic questions can help you narrow it down. Once you have decided what brand to buy you need to see what they have that will suit your needs.
1. How much time you plan to spend on the bike and what you will be using it for is a big factor. If you are looking for something that you will ride most of the time by yourself there are many sporty models to choose from. If you want something to get you back and forth to work you might want a smaller sporty bike as well. You will find a motorcycle that will fit any purpose; you just need to make sure it has all the features you are looking for.
2. If this is your first motorcycle purchase you need to make sure you can comfortably control your new bike. Each year many bikers are injured or die because of inexperience and inexperienced riders. Just getting your license to ride does not give you the amount of experience needed to get around safely, especially around more experienced riders or heavy traffic. You need to spend time on your bike and practice good safety habits to avoid a crash.
3. You need something that is going to fit into your budget and all dealers have financing options. New bikes have a manufacturer’s warranty that can be extended, as well as a service plan. Motorcycle dealers also offer special incentives from time to time throughout the year so, check to see if there are any upcoming specials and buy your bike in the off seasons. Some motorcycles hold their value better than others just like cars.
4. Most people have some idea of the type of bike they want, but you need to be sure that your bike will fit your needs. If you will be carrying a passenger most of the time, the weight limit and comfort will be important. Your bike will handle differently with a passenger so, you need to get used to how to handle the bike with a passenger before you get into heavy traffic. If you are looking for something to relax and cruise on the weekend with a passenger you will want something that is comfortable with a larger gas tank and weight capacity.
5. If you will be taking long road trips on your motorcycle then you definitely want one built for travel and comfort. These are bigger bikes built especially for touring and cruising with more storage capacity, comfort for the passenger, bigger gas tanks and bigger weight limit. You can accessorize any bike with storage bags but it will increase the weight and that will affect how your motorcycle performs.
Go to the showroom of the dealer and look at what is available. When you find one you are interested in, try it on. Sit on the seat and lift it into the riding position. Make sure that both feet rest firmly on the ground and your arms are at a comfortable length.
Motorcycles are very inexpensive to insure and the average gas tank holds 3-4 gallons of gas that will last for about 300 miles. Reduce your risk of injury and disappointment by choosing a bike that fits you well and has all of the features you want when you buy one.
