The old saying about how you couldn’t change a sow’s ear into a silk purse is certainly not true with motorcycles! You can have just about any style of motorcycle you want and for any riding you would like to do, for example, touring, cross country, dirt biking or even being a policeman.
There are six informal classifications or nicknames used by manufacturers, riders, and the motorcycling media. There are strict classification systems enforced by competitive motorcycle sport sanctioning bodies or by certain legal jurisdictions for motorcycle registration, emissions, road traffic safety rules or motorcyclist licensing. Different classifications are for cruiser, sport bike, touring, standard, dual sport and scooters.
The cruiser models are styled after American machines dating back to the 1930′s up to the early 1960′s as made by Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Excelsior-Henderson. These bikes were tuned for low torque, making them a less demanding bike to ride as it is not necessary to shift as frequently to accelerate or to maintain control. The riding position is somewhat different with the feet forward and the hands are higher so that the spine is erect or just leaning back slightly. Cruisers are not built for tight cornering ability due to the lack of ground clearance.
Sport bikes are built for speed, acceleration, braking, and cornering on paved roads. This is all at the expense of comfort as well as fuel economy. Sport bikes have high performance engines and are built within a light weight frame. The engines are the inline-four engines which dominate the sport like category, with v-twins having a significant presence. Sport bikes have high foot pegs, forcing the legs closer to the body and making a long reach for the hand controls.
The touring bikes can be equipped from mostly any bike and are meant to excel in covering long distances. They have large displacement engines, a large fuel tank for long distance runs and ample protection from the wind with a relaxed, upright seating position. Great passenger accommodation also with ample luggage space. These bikes are a show piece and can weigh up to 900 lbs.
Our standard bikes are versatile, just a general street motorcycle and are recommended for beginner motorcyclists, due to their flexibility, low cost and moderate engines. Standard bikes usually do not come with wind protection; if they do happen to have a windshield, they are quite small.
We have not touched on the dual-sport or the scooter but maybe another day.
