Riding in a car while taking a trip and seeing the sites from the car window is like watching a movie on a screen that size, taking a road trip on a motorcycle is seeing the same movie but on a wraparound IMAX screen with surround sound. The freedom and being one with the surroundings have drawn many to join the ranks that choose to experience the world in this way while wearing their best motorcycle jackets, riding the motorcycles of their choosing.
Riders come from a cross section of life; there are motorcycles that best fit every rider and their riding style. One type of motorcycle is the touring bike. This is the bike that is made for longer rides on the road. Harley Davidson started this style of biking by offering a fairing and luggage as optional equipment on the Electra Glide in 1965. Early bikers would call this type of bike garbage wagons, but over time they began to see them as a good idea, and called them baggers and then dressers.
BMW brought out its first bike for touring in the late 70′s, the R100RT. Honda also produced a bike made for touring: the Gold Wing. The thing about adding farings and luggage as an add on, is it would affect the handling of the bike. In 1980 Honda took the idea and produced the GL100 Gold Wing Interstate, which was their first touring bike designed from the ground up for touring, with a fairing and luggage. Today touring bikes come with heated grips and seats, and foot warmer, surround sound, cruise control, electric reverse, navigations systems, anti-lock brakes and more.
Another class within the class of touring, is sport touring. Sport-tourers combine the comfort the carrying capacity of a touring bike with the handling and excitement of a sportbike, so one way to think of it is a sport bike with larger fairings and hard lockable luggage. This class of motorcycle was around quite a while without a name. BMW has been building this type of bike for just over a quarter of a century. Even though the sport touring bike gives up some sporting capability as a sport bike, and doesn’t have the same carrying capacity of a touring bike, there are many that choose this class of motorcycle.
Whatever the riding style of a rider may be, there is the perfect class of motorcycle for them. The motorcycle a rider chooses to ride and the leather motorcycle they choose to wear are an extension of them and who they are.
