Maui is a beautiful Hawaiian Island. Those who are lucky enough to go will be able to experience beauty and adventure that most won’t be able to enjoy. I was one of those lucky ones who experienced Maui at its best.
When we planned our trip, we decided to tour Maui on a motorcycle. With the open air, it would be a ride of a lifetime. We couldn’t wait to go on this trip. I have been riding motorcycles for forty years. And, my wife rides with me on her own motorcycle. For this trip, we would ride double, which was new to both of us.
Road to Hana: Harder than We Thought
I had read about the infamous Road to Hana and thought I was familiar with what was to come. I knew there were many sharp turns and unleveled terrain. However, I underestimated it.
- With Over 300 turns, many of which were 150 degrees or better,
- Narrow road that had many blind turns
- With only one lane too narrow for two vehicles
- And bridges that were single lane and wet
This was a ride I will remember.
Adrenaline Junkies Get a Thrill
I guess by now you get the idea that this is not a road for those who are faint of heart. Motorcyclists who have plenty of experience would respect this road. Just to give you an idea of it’s difficulty, there was only one other motorcycle on the road. That motorcyclist was riding alone.
I guess I did not do enough homework on this trip. Not to say it is impossible, but if I were to rate the Road to Hana from 1 to 10, 1 being a leisurely ride and 10 next to impossible, I would give it an 8.
Two more roads on Maui were more difficult but, for those adrenalin junkies, the Road to Hana will give them a thrill. If you decide to try the Road to Hana, I would suggest a compact car. If you decide to rent a motorcycle and go for it, a big cruiser will give you a challenge even if you are an expert rider.

As you have guessed, I survived the Road to Hana. It was totally worth every second, even the nerve wracking ones. Now that you have been warned, are you willing to attempt the Road to Hana on a motorcycle?
