It’s implementation of the plan was “bungled” and that it was unacceptable that the Driving Standards Agency has failed to get all 66 planned centres operational, therefore delaying introduction of the new test.
In launching the report, Committee Chair Louise Ellman MP said “Many cancidates and trainers now have to travel too far for their motorcycle test. Ths adds to the cost, and in some cases, exposes candidates to fast and dangerous roads on the way to a test site “ before they have even taken their test.”
In some cases candidates have to make round trips in excess of 200 miles, which seems a bit ludicrous when if a rider fails the test, he/she then has to ride home such distances having just been deemed “not up to standard”
The bigger picture shows that with the new legislation/motorcycle test and lack of available facilities, fewer people are taking their motorcycle test. This has a knock on effect in that less people are buying motorcycles. In conjunction with the current financial climate this is a disaster.
It doesn’t end there. Many motorbike tour companies are small one man bands, whose business has been affected drastically, with fewer and fewer customers booking tours. The current financial climate has also hindered their ability to be able to extend their advertising and therefore compete with the larger touring organisations.
Carl Coombes, Managing Director of Extra Mile Bike Tours Ltd
( www.extramilebiketours.com ) says he is experiencing a number of approaches from smaller operators, looking to either merge or form working alliances in order to support their struggling businesses. Mr Coombes said ” We have been approached numerous times since January 2010 and whilst we are very open to forming alliances, most expect to come to the party with nothing to offer. There has to be something special or unique that these smaller operations offer, that we currently do not, in order to make it worthwhile for both parties.”
So, not only have millions of pounds been spent / wasted on this madness, but it would appear that unless something is done, then millions of pounds and many businesses such as dealerships and tour companies will be lost.
