Whether you have a stock motorcycle seat or a brand new custom motorcycle seat there are 2 things that are foremost in your mind, does it look good and is it comfortable. Depending on your riding style, your age, and the type of motorcycle there’s a lot of variables.
For the large touring bikes, generally the seats are wider. This works for someone with an inseam
greater than 30 inches. If yours isn’t at least that the seat needs to be lowered and narrowed in the thigh area. A lot of times a softer foam is helpful under the rider. This spreads the weight out more and eliminates dead spots. For you guys that have broken your tailbone at some point in time, soft foam
will really help.
The cruising class of bikes from softail to Dyna, Kawasaki to Harley once again are set up for an individual that is 5’9″, 30 inch inseam and a 32 inch sleeve length. This is the American national average for men. If you are shorter, you will need softer foam narrower seat. For taller people, higher seat and move back will be needed.
Sport bikes are in a class alone. They are designed for speed not comfort. The seats have minimal contours and are hard. If you’re looking for a little softer or a “butt stop” the foam needs to be changed and contoured for you.
Age has a lot to do with how long you can sit in the same position. Backs get tired, hips get sore and knees start to ache. Custom motorcycle seats should address the riders needs. Lumbar support and more cushioning can be built into your stock seat, while still using the stock cover.
Last but not least the ladies……. Because of design most motorcycles will not fit you unless you are at least 5’8″. The grips are too far forward and generally the bike is too tall. Having a custom seat made it could be the best investment you make. Rider safety and comfort is can’t be emphasized too much.
