With summer here, many have road trip fever, which is a desire to break free from the scheduled everyday events, and take off on a motorcycle on the open road. Across the United States there are mountain passes and ocean highways and there are desert lands and vast farmlands all waiting to be discovered and experienced.
One of the places to ride a motorcycle to, is the “Going To The Sun Road” in northern Montana. It is amazing to witness the beauty of glaciers in northern Montana. The “Going To The Sun Road” runs east to west for 50 miles in Glacier National Park. It is good to take a half day for this motorcycle drive, in early June or just after Labor Day because these times of the year there are less people, which will provide the most unencumbered back country tour. This park is open year round, but parts of the route close from mid September to mid June because of the winter weather. In July and August when the road is very busy with traffic and maintenance work, there is a free Eco-friendly shuttle bus.
The sun road crosses the Continental Divide at an elevation of 6,646 feet. This is a good place to see mountain goats and big horn sheep. The road then passes by Jackson Glacier Overlook, which as the name says, is a good place to see glaciers. This road was created 76 years ago, and includes portions carved into a sheer vertical cliff, that is call the Garden Wall. On the other side of the road the valley lies thousands of feet below.
There are many that choose to see these wonders of nature from the back of a motorcycle. This way the rider is one with their bike, and with their surroundings. A rider always gets to wear a helmet, and leather jacket at minimum to ride safe.
