There are as many ways to pack luggage to a motorcycle as there are riders. Here is one way that is fast and simple. This method works best with custom bikes that have a sissy bar. So, you have filled your saddle bags to the maximum and you need to load what is left to your passenger seat or to your rear fender, hanging from the sissy bar.
If you were trying to attach each item separately, it would take a long time and you would need many straps, and disassembling would again take a long time.. As you are travelling with a motorcycle, I make a guess that you have a sleeping pad, a sleeping bag and a tent with you.
Simply spread your sleeping pad or pads to the ground, put any suitable objects like clothes, packed tent, packed sleeping bag, tarpaulins, water bottles etc on top, and roll the whole thing to a one tight easily handled package.
It is now very easy to attach this one single package to your bike, either on the passenger seat or on to the sissy bar. You will save loads of time instead of attaching each item separately. Plus, as everything is inside the sleeping pad, a little bit of rain is not going to get through.
I like to attach the roll with 2 straps, they will handle any diameter and its very easy to add objects hanging to them. Just do not overtighten the straps, as it may break your tent poles.
