The freedom of the open road calls, and many choose to answer. Whether a rider chooses to answer on a cruiser, touring, dual-sport, or standard style bike, a motorcycle jacket is a rider’s next best friend. It is an extension of the biker’s personality as well as protection for them.
Whatever motorcycle jacket a rider chooses to wear says something about them. It, as well as the bike a rider chooses to ride is an extension of their personality. Jackets come in different styles such as classic, euro, bomber, and pistol Pete. The classic style is the rebel rider look, the James Dean look. It comes with a collar that snaps down, and can be unsnapped to allow the rider to fully zip up the zipper, keeping out the cold and wind. The euro style is a sleek look. It comes with a high banded collar, and instead of snap pockets it has zippered pockets that lay flat, which adds to the sleekness of the jacket. The bomber style is reminiscent of the World War I time period. It was created to keep the pilots warm in the unheated cockpits of their airplanes. It comes with a higher collar, wristbands and a waistband. The pistol Pete style comes with the same collar type as the classic style, only with a large pocket that goes most of the height of the jacket, with smaller pockets with in it. Another way for a rider to express who they are is to have a patch on the back of their jacket. Some choose the American flag, or the flag of their state. Others choose to have a patch from the riding club they ride with or some other symbol that says something about who they are.
A motorcycle jacket is peace of mind for a rider. It is protection in many ways. A jacket protects the rider from the different types of weather that can be experienced out on the road. In the heat a jacket with air vents and a zip out liner protects a rider’s skin from the hot sun, while creating a cooling air flow through the unzipped vents. The zip out liner makes the jacket lighter and also cooler leaving the protective outer portion of the jacket. It also protects a rider from the cold, rain, and wind. With the zip out liner put back in and the zippered vents closed, collar zipped up fully and warm layered clothing beneath the jacket the rider has warmth and protection from these elements that come when riding in the colder times of the year. A jacket also protects the rider from flying pebbles, rocks, and other flying debris that can be a hazard at times on the on the road. Then last, and most definitely not least a jacket keeps the skin of a rider safe from abrasion in the case of being thrown from their bike, or having to lay their bike down. No one ever likes to think of this happening, wearing a jacket gives the rider peace of mind knowing they have that protection in case it does.
While out on the open road take notice of the riders that you see. The motorcycle they choose to ride, and the motorcycle jacket they choose to wear says a lot about their riding style and who they are.
