There are many different types of motorcycles available to choose from. Before you go shopping for a new bike you should decide what type of motorcycle will be best suited for your specific needs. Each type of motorcycle is designed for a specific purpose and is available in a wide variety of colors and other options.
Knowing what you will be using your motorcycle for and a little about the different types available will save you time and money.
Below is a list of the most popular types of motorcycles:
1. The Street Bike-Specifically designed for riding on paved roads this bike features smooth tires and an engine that is capable of over 100 miles per hour. They feature an average size gas tank and moderate comfort for the rider.
2. The Cruiser-This bike features an engine designed to require less shifting and smooth acceleration. The rider’s feet are more towards the front and their hands are in a position that allows the spine to be in a comfortable position for long rides. If you plan to be riding this type of bike for long distances at high speeds you might want to consider adding a windshield. Keep in mind that Cruisers generally sit close to the ground and may be more difficult to handle on curves and general turning.
3. The Chopper-Although the chopper is considered to be a type of cruiser they are usually custom built with the owners needs in mind. They are usually a sort of fashion statement with custom accessories and paint jobs.
4. The Sport Bike-These bikes are usually built for speed and maneuvering on paved roads. They feature high performance engines and light weight frames for speed. This type of bike usually sits high off the ground, is not very comfortable for long rides and is not as good on gas. The way the rider sits on this type of bike helps with wind resistance. The rider is forced to lean towards the front over the gas tank which can cause fatigue to the arms and wrists on longer rides.
5. The Touring Bike-Most motorcycles can be accessorized and used for touring. The bikes made specifically for this type of rider feature larger gas tanks, more comfortable seating and better shields from the wind. The touring model is also designed with the passenger in mind allowing for a heavier carrying capacity and storage.
6. The Dirt Bike- As the name suggests these bikes are built for off road activities. They sit high off the ground making them easier to handle on curves, rough roads and hills. They feature smaller engines, light frames and focus on suspension.
7. Dual Sport Motorcycle-This model combines the features of dirt bikes and street bikes to provide a type of all terrain motorcycle. They are easy to handle on most any type of road surface.
Every type of motorcycle is available in a variety of styles with different options. Many people may want to stay with a certain manufacturer and each one should make a variation of one of the popular types.
